Hmm, it does beg the question though, if we are treating asylum seekers so appallingly, why on earth are they traversing the entire European continent and living in camps on the French coast, queueing to risk their lives crossing the channel in inflatables, just to get to this country. Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't make sense.

Perhaps Because the place they are coming from is generally even worse and they trust us to do the right thing and treat them like human beings.

Without question there are.

Just like drugs etc, you may not see them but there's so much slipping in every day like you wouldn't believe.

Looking at the stats about half are granted asylum so about 18k people (includes kids, families etc not just adults) are granted asylum.

The ones who cases are rejected are sent back. Which is how the system should work.

If they land in the UK and claim Asylum then until their case is assessed they are asylum seekers. They are not illegal immigrants.

People who have overstayed their visas or not left before their visa waiver or other temp stay expires are by definition illegal immigrants. They came across legally but now stay in the UK illegally.

Those that came across illegally, never registered there presence are the quintessential illegal immigrant.

The majority do stay in other nations. I can't remember the exact stats but I think we take less than our fair share by most reconings. But some people think the UK is a shining beacon of hope and/or have some greater connection to here.

What about Hungary Poland
Slovakia, Czech Republic. Do they take a fair share... I'm all for helping people. But there needs to be a ballance and a control.

Exactly. So why are they risking their and their families lives crossing the channel in dinghies? If I was escaping persecution, I’d be only to happy for myself and my family to seek asylum in France and don’t forget, they’ve probably gone through at least one other 'safe' European country to get there. Perhaps it’s our weather they like?

Germany was not on my list nore was the other country's on your list..
There's plenty of other country's that are scared of immigrants. To say we have not done our fair share is I think a little thin. I don't know the figures but many people have made the UK their home however they way.

If we are to except people in real need then, we too ballance that by cutting numbers that enter in other ways.
