Ukraine counter offensive

just like the IDF for war crimes, or NATO or US....ah, they don't subscribe nor recognise the ICJ
Vlad the invader should be found guilty of genocide and war crimes. Tinpot dictators always get found out.

True as when war like activities are going on sides are generally not lilly white. The ICJ just gets ignored or interfered with. Both the UK and USA have been at that fairly recently.

Many posts in this thread assume all is exactly as it seems. Yes Russia did invade but intentions especially in the west I wonder. One intention was clearly stated by the USA's defence secretary early on. Ukraine of course will be hunky dory for it's people when that is all over. Join the EU, NATO and anything else they fancy.

Meanwhile weapons continue to dribble in.

If they so wish.

Vlad the invader claims he didn't want NATO on his borders as a justification. Now he has forced the hand of Finland are they next? But then Finland's neighbours are in NATO? This could take some time...

What about that sh*t stirring that went on in 2014?
Since is a better word and refusing Ukraine heavy weapons and later giving them pure defensive weapons when it started. Those don't allow an army to win. They make things far more difficult for the attackers and have. But all of Ukraine - just how would Russia manage it. Armed population and also a training camp not far from Kyev that runs summer schools for kids. Also a fair old mix of views going east to west in Ukraine itself. The period when areas could vote to speak Ukraine or Russian has it's interesting aspects. That ended.

So Russia moves forces to Ukraine's boarder and talks to the USA who say maybe to some requirements but no so surprise surprise Russia attacks. There is already a capable lot in the Donbas fighting to be Russian and getting a bit of help at times as the Azov brigade had been pretty good at driving them back to where they currently are. When interviewed the Azov brigade now says they are seriously depleted. They merged with the Ukraine army but had been on the USA's terrorist list before that. Why - pass. All sorted.

Anyhow.
The BBC just did 1/2 hour on Ukraine showing two of the power hits.300 tonne transformers wrecked. In one the control centre was destroyed as well. Still ok in the other. They are also having to repair lines where shelling is going on. Sometimes a do it again task. The head of Ukraine';s power said we are ok and will manage in my watch etc. In some areas that means 2hrs of power and then some without. 4hrs mentioned but I have heard mention of 8. What was mentioned is that it is a Soviet network so they know what to hit. Where the important and weak areas are. That may mean there is room for escalation. It lloks like the transformers are taken out with some form of cluster munition. Russian transformers and there aren't many sources of 300tonne ones.

I was thinking more of the election that got the leader in the west wanted, with a little help from not everybody in the east being able to vote

Could say we won the ideological war years ago when Gorbachev allowed the wall to come down and Western influences to gain ground in the old Soviet Union. There is a school of thought that suggests we should leave some dignity for the people who largely backed down, and not ram Western influences down their throats by taking NATO, EU, etc right up to their garden fence.

The Azov regiment in 2014 numbered 300, even today it represents less than 0.3% of Ukrainian forces, it's legendary status is well over the top, it is also mainly russian speaking, and was funded by a Jewish Ukrainian billionaire prior to joining the regular army.

The leader of the wagner mercenaries prigozhin has recently stated that it will take 3 years to take the Donbass region alone, some thought it would take only days to overrun the Ukrainians, and anyone thinking the special operation has no effect on russian finances is living in cloud cuckoo land, income is down 33% and Europe will wean itself off gas/oil over the next few years, which will force russia to sell at a lower and lower price to China and India etc.
