America being the world's policeman who have recently begun to question whether they're putting enough money into the pot.The EU was founded by men who had just lived through the worst war the world has ever seen. Nothing was more important to them than preventing a recurrence. As you say, it is obvious that their hopes have been fulfilled, among those countries that became members at least.
