Russia did similar fairly recently into Ukraine where the boarder was not well protected. Pundits reckon in both cases it's intended to draw troops from the main front. One report on the Russian response mentioned their national guard and some other group. Used before and essentially can do what ever they like in an area.900 Days after Putin invaded - and failed to take any of their prime objectives - Ukraine have not only counter attacked but hold 1,000sq km of the Russian region of Kursk after launching a surprise incursion across the border on August 6.

Main front. A pundit on AlJ gave an outline of what the Russians are probably up to. 2 towns that are both rail and road hubs. So far not taken.
