VAT on education?

There is definitely a view that private education shouldn't exist, driven a political philosophy that says you achieve social mobility by putting everyone in the same school.

That is two separate arguments. They are not the same thing.

Have you been looking af Finland? It is not banned there.

But making a profit out of it is.

Surprisingly, very few people want to run a private school without making money out of it.

Who could have seen that coming?

The state schools that have spare places, because they have spare places at the moment. Demographics mean schools are shrinking at the moment. They have space to add classes if needed in many cases.
Listening on the Jeremy Vine show this afternoon and a woman phoned in who after being told her private school fees were going up due to vat, she tried every state school within a 20 mile radius. No places at all and they all had a waiting list.

The the LA will have to step in because they will find a place or make a school take them. This shouldn't be news to anyone who pays attention to this.

So based on that scenario.

- government collects zero VAT (y)
- Tax payer pays to educate another child

Good job, well done Labour. You're really getting the hang of this government thing.

Some LA's from out of the Borough had no specialist places in their own Borough so they were sent to another borough. I had one student from Hertfordshire that was sent daily by cab to Newham.

Now it's a specialist place of some sort. That makes more sense. It can't be a formally recognised one because they're exempt VAT, but the education system has been run into the ground and getting SENs is a nightmare so it's quite possible they've got an undiagnosed or borderline child.

Yeah, that person may be in for a difficult time if they can't manage the price increase.

Mottie is describing his own experience.
He used to tutor SEN kids.

AFAIK, the caller was not describing a lack of SEN place situation.

Then the LA will find a place. It might not be the school they want but a place will be made.

So based on your invalid claim that many top earners will emigrate being false:
- People pay the VAT on private education (y)
- little change in LA school population. :)

Job done.
