Fearing the Navy would be too big an opponent for a land invasion, the Germans launched a massive air offensive with the intention of wiping out first the RAF then factories munitions etc, they did eventually change tack and target homes as well. The attacker always needs much more manpower and hardware to succeed, than a defender. We had the massive advantage of a very effective radar system - Home Chain, which could spot aircraft as the took off in Europe to bomb the UK. The Germans had radar but made little effective use of it.

Berlin bombed London in August 1940 (in error, sh1t navigator), Churchill then ordered the bombing of Berlin, which then caused a massive blitz on London which gave the RAF a small amount of time to regroup and repair airfields.
