We need to talk about Kevin, sorry, I mean ban-all-sheds

I am now imaging someone logging onto an internet forum with blood spurting everywhere :) Probably very true in this age. Surely the only advice would be "phone an b****y ambulance now"
More like a first aider / paramedic telling a casualty how to avoid the accident that caused the injury before starting to treat the injury.

Hmmm, but they would consult a professional on a dedicated number not consult an internet forum which is usually BAS's plan B in his list.

Yes, but it's his 'Plan A' we're talking about - which he will often cite even when it is obvious that an OP has an urgent need to solve a problem. ... or are you suggesting that he only mentions Plan A in order to hopefully 'frighten/intimidate them' into adopting Plan B?

Kind Regards, John

Nah, was only commenting on Bernard's idea of a person going on the internet to find out how to not bleed to death really. Humour can be lost on the internet :)

To be honest I have learned more (especially about what I don't know) from BAS than most people on here - few exceptions such as Westie and RF. I mainly just read for my info so I am better informed before I start any DIY so fortunately don't find myself biting of more than I can chew.

That's not what Bernard either wrote or meant. He said nothing about the internet, since the mode of communication is is irrelevant. He merely pointed out that if someone was at risk of bleeding to death, the person with them needs to know what immediate steps to take to avoid that outcome. Advising them to go and learn about first aid so that, if they are ever faced with a medical emergency again, they will know what to do, can and should wait until after the immediate problem is resolved (with the aid of someone answering the immediate question).

AFAIC, when you all have to resort to comparing people who can't be bothered to learn how to work out what size cable to use to supply their shed, or who have lights that won't turn on or won't turn off or come on dimly, with people starving or bleeding to death, you've all lost the plot.

If someone through ignorance has started electrical work which they cannot finish and as a result have no lights their house is hazardous due to darkness. They may have torches or ( dread the thought ) candles but the risk of accidents ( falls or trips ) is high.
Why can't they do what they would do in the event of a power cut? Which, BTW, can easily last longer than it takes to learn that not all blacks are neutral.

I took it in context of the OP and how BAS replies on a internet forum. He also didn't mention that the emergency services may have been informed (your assumption) or that the person responding was a trained medical person at work. AFAIK BAS is not a qualified spark and is not replying as part of his job.

Enough digression now :)

It wouldn't need to be a "trained medical person at work". It could be anyone who had something useful to say about what would, or might, stop the bleeding.

Indeed, and the same is true of me. However, he is as able as almost any electrician to correctly answer the questions we get here, when he so wishes. However, that does underline the fact that one doesn't necessarily have to be an electrician to give good answers to electrical questions, any more than one has to be a "trained medical person" to be able to give useful advice as to how to stop bleeding.

i thought he was part of the furniture
he speaks from the shoulder and taking offence is just petty
i am sure he is a really good guy and follows rules...as he wants us to do
i remember when i joined he and his circle of no no's were helping everyone in suggesting getting a qualified electrician for any query
i think he may have mellowed now
i welcome his comments but weigh them up against those who wish to instruct rather than censure totally
i think anyone who gives a comment here without full responsibily for the advice as being totally safe is not doing the forum and its members due service and attention in keeping with the gravity of what is proposed
i have had loads of help here, in most sections, plumbing flooring and the like
nothing has leaked or fallen down
and i havent been electrocuted or burned my house down
worse still i havent procured certification for any electrical work i have done...including a armoured cable joint...i wouldnt have tried it if it wasnt for this forum

finally

let awake dogs lie....they may tend to go to sleep someday

we have a supplier here where i get electrical and sundry parts
its called warrior warehouse...i bet BAS would like to run it!!

I was heavily involved in a classic car forum and it was becoming like an addiction . Then I started getting a bit of unpleasantness from a few contributors .Rather than spoil it for the majority I left it, thinking if some don't want the " benefits of my wisdom" then b******s to them. How do we go about restoring peace and harmony to this forum ? I don't want to see BAS leave/be banned but I can see he can rub people up the wrong way (or maybe to him it's the right way)

I don't really see what the issue is. If you don't like his contributions, put him on your ignore list. It's really not that difficult to do, and the new forum software also (mostly) hides quoted content as well - this can be a curse and a blessing, as posts can fail to make sense with replies to nothing, but that's the price you pay I guess.

Yes - but, at least from my point of view, it's not about 'us' ('regulars') who see his posts every day and, in some cases, may tire of him. My concerns are nothing to to do with myself (I'm far too old, ugly and experienced of such people to be troubled by them) but, rather, related to the way he interacts with OPs, particularly newbies, and, ironically, the negative effect that may have on the safety of what they do electrically.

True, true and true. However, I think a few posts from other members in the same thread negate this risk, particularly if BAS isn't the first respondent.
