It's not that I left, but I avoid posting certain types of questions due to BAS. I go instead to
http://www.electriciansforums.co.uk, where they are more polite, and just as knowledgeable. I don't care if he gets banned or not, that is for the forum admins to decide. They invest a lot more time and energy in this forum than me. The forum - and BAS - will still be useful to me from other posts.
I don't believe anyone posts information purely for altruistic purposes on any forum. Some are building their own ego, some their knowledge, some are trade and want to assure their business by discouraging DIY. Some might even be bored/addicted. Everyone has their agenda. The great thing about the internet, is that whatever any individual does, the information is the winner, and you usually get the information you're after one way or another.
It's worth noting, than even if we agree BAS is one POS egotistical w****r, this doesn't stop his presence here being useful. Whether you ban such a person is down to the personal preference of the admins. I ran a forum with ~3000 members and I had a zero-tolerance for flames, it was just the way I wanted to run the thing, so I banned any spam or insults. If I wanted to introduce a new DIY forum I'd be free to run it as I pleased. It would take me ~1 hour using free hosting, and I suspect most of that time would be spent choosing the phpBB theme
. If there was demand it would just take off. The biggest difficulty is finding trustworthy 'lieutenants' to police it with your values and vision. This is vital if you want to avoid it become a spam-haven, or else you give up part of your life to doing the work yourself.
I think there is (in the UK) a bit of an obsession with diynot.com. It has been immensely popular and successful. There is room in the market for further forums, and it shouldn't be considered as a slight to this forum to say it. Different admins bring with them different perspectives and focus. Even the look/feel of the forum can affect the types of contributions. I very much hope we'll see more in the future, to cater to everyone's requirements, and I don't say that just because of BAS!
