The answer wasn't a multiplication. It was another addition.
There were four or five pairs of numbers. You then had to add up the sum of all those pairs.
imagine a clock face, for simplicity.
You add the1 to the 7 to get 8, the 2 to the 8 to get 10, the 3 to the 9, to get 12, ad infinitum.
Then you add up all those simple numbers, as in 8 + 10 +12 etc.
Or maybe easier to imagine the opposite faces of a dice, so 1+6, 2+5, 3+4 gives you 7,7and 7.
Then you add up the 7's.
