Took the dog for a walk up to our local department store. They had a sale on in the kitchenware section. I bought a set of cutting boards and a reversible bread/meat carving board - 20% off and a milk/gravy induction pan, 30%off.

I might be needing a new washing machine and have been checking out a few. I'm very confused by these new cycles. There often seems to be a quick cycle for cotton taking half an hour. But then the full cotton cycle often seem to take three hours or longer. Something in between would be nice! My twenty year old machine takes just over an hour.

Our 10 year old machine defaults to the near on 3 hour cotton cycle when first switched on. There is however, a quick wash cycle that takes 20 minutes (or 30 if you select extra rinse). Most of our stuff ls done on the dark colours/denim programme that takes 1 hr 10 mins. Slightly less if you turn the temp down to 30°. There’s about ten more programmes we don’t ever use!

Tip. Whatever machine/s you're considering, look for the manual online before you buy. Although the manual might not give all information about all programmes, it should give you an idea of what the machine offers.

It's weird, I've just looked at the manual for mine and it lists all the programmes but doesn't give all the timings for each. I only discovered all of these (the timings) once I bought the machine and flicked through them. As per Mottie's reply, most machines will give a variety of programmes lasting minutes up to hours with a few between. I can choose between a 14 min quick wash, 39, 49, 59. Most of them I can tweak the temp and spin speed. I use these and tend not to use the longer eco programmes which take longer due to using less elec and/or water.

Mine also has an app thingy that gives access to more programmes and allows you to tweak some of the existing ones ... needless to say it's never been used!

And buy one that has an invertor motor.

She broke one of the tines(?) on the garden fork a few days ago, I welded that back up, and reinforced the entire four, yesterday she burnt the grass trimmer motor out. Well it, was old, worn out, and long over due for replacement anyway, so I've my eye out for a decent used one, on FB. Why do so many, advertise on there, then not bother to reply to offers to buy?

One popped up, just half a mile away, a used Flymo, Contour, so I chased it up, and it seemed a possible bargain for £12. So Avril, took a walk to take a look. Absolute bargain it was, good as new, so it would have been rude, not to.

15Kg of dried dog food and a new Smart Cover for my iPad.
