The right to buy, did not reduce the total number of houses available.
Course it did, 40% are now used for private rent. If councils were able to replace the ones sold off at massive discounts it may have helped.

Yep, around here, it made people who bought, proud of their homes and the tendency was for them to look after them much better than the council could, or did, and for much less cost. Tenants, became proud owners, money was spent on their purchase, then usually even more money spent upgrading them. A liability on the council, became an asset to an area.

By contrast, the still council owned homes, stick out like a sore thumb.

Whilst true, RTB has contributed to the housing crisis

Thatcher prevented councils from building new housing stock and it forced councils to hand over the money.

Thatchers roll out of RTB therefore meant far less social housing….which has been a major factor in the housing crisis

Just different owners.

Councils have lost 2m social rent homes which are now not available to social tenants. Total numbers are irrelevant to over 1 million households on waiting lists. Go and rent one from a wealthy pensioner doesn't help.

That's as may be, I just think councils should have been allowed to replace those sold.

Of course they should, many people are asset rich, with poor incomes.
So those that gained their valuable assets without paying the full price shouldn't have to downsize to pay for their heating if needed ?

It makes a mockery out of those that are genuinely affected by costs if so that had to pay full value or pay full rent.

There's not enough housing. If all the ex council houses were handed back to the council the number of houses and people would remain the same.

Of course it did. They were never replaced.

Still same numnber of houses, but much less council housing stock, which is generally for the most needy

It's odd that people neglect the problems associated with the title of that.

To the private sector, a loss to the social rented sector.
I totally agree that was probably not good for TTs. Wholeheartedly. Less secure tennancies with higher rents etc etc. Those houses were sold with families in them. The overall ratio of people to houses didn't change. Those houses didn't just vanish. The sole reason for the housing shortage is not enough have been built.
