Congratulations sir kier

One of their advisors Already talking about means testing state pension . Couldn't make it up .

Presuming it's not one of your fantasies, but actually rooted in reality........

What is off-limits for you then, in the government's attempts to start rebuilding from the ruins bequeathed to them?
Everything?

So that you can turn around in five years and say that "they were as useless as the last lot: they did nothing"?

This even though from the Daily Mail this seems a reasonable review of the implications around reducing the cost of OAP.

I think this happened a few days ago. I don't think he actually said the state pension should be "means tested". I think he said that he believed wealthy pensioners might have to contribute more in tax in some way. And anyway, he stressed it was a personal opinion and that he wasn't advising the Labour party on policy. He seems to be a technical adviser on tax collection.

I have not been advising on policy... Any views are well away from what I've been discussing with Labour.

If you google means testing of pensions guess who is top of the list. (hint it's not Socialist Worker)

There will be lots of this around. GB News

State pension could be MEANS-TESTED under Labour, admits senior Keir Starmer advisor

Could and would are 2 entirely different things. Of course they could be means tested.

There will be a frenzy around the brainstorming, gammon-grabber huddles, to see who can come up with the most pensioner enraging headline they can think of.

I also read suggestions about the whole of a pension lump sum being taxed, removing the 25% tax free part. Only suggestions of course but the fact is, they need to raise a lot of money and having stated they will definitely not raise income tax or NI, that narrows the field somewhat.
Windfall taxes on oil companies, taxes on oil exploration (if they don't ban it), pensions, inheritance tax, VAT.

We'll have to wait and see. They've spoken a lot about growth and if they achieve that, less need for stealth taxes. A major house building programme would help and that may well be on the cards.

Another idea is to make pensions liable to inheritance tax. Apparently, lots of people with plenty of money like to put as much as they can into their pensions because it can be passed on tax free.

So it turns out it's all from an ex mandarin who very probably is not a real advisor in the usual sense
Also he now advises Reeves. Who next I wonder?

Trouble with this sort of thing is that Labour will waste time answering and will probably get asked if they will or will not do it. That is the basic idea - flack. On the other end of the scale John Snow asks why he gets it and other things when he doesn't need them. Labour says no and whatever he will always continue to get it.

The triple lock is another piece of flannel. If state pension rise rate continues they would be paying £29 per year in tax in 3 years - if at that point the threshold doesn't change. That is a decision to make when this point is reached or when this happens.

The child allowance is means tested. Some of the conditions are interesting. Starmer wont increase the cap due to fiscal rules pointing out that at the poverty end there are other ways of easing the situation. Those he will be using.

Our PM has told the civil service that they can call him Keir if they like. LOL That might be to ease fears from the sort of things he did as a mandarin.

Compulsory registration for all building trades ?
A sort of licensing scheme also involving assesmant of competence written and practical ? Every 5 years ? Failure to do so will be a criminal offence
