nuke or fossil fuel

Any chance someone could explain to me how population growth is linked to oil please?

Last time I looked at an atlas, one little corner of Europe - specifically Holland, Belgium and South East England - had the highest population density on the planet. Now a population cannot grow beyond the limits of its food supply so how do we survive?

One solution is to buy food from other places where the population density is much lower, like the USA. The other way is to use the products of industry to revolutionize agriculture. Out goes the peasant farmer growing just enough for his own needs and in comes the combine harvester. Out goes the manure and compost and in comes ammonium nitrate made in factories and delivered by lorry.

This new, mechanized agriculture needs power. It needs a lot of power; far more than the village water wheel could deliver. Oil is convenient and reasonably cheap - at least it WAS cheap. (Chalk one up to joe-90 who has already pointed this out.) If we don't have oil we will need some other fuel to take its place.

In those parts of the world where the peasant farmer still ploughs his field with one horsepower, the price of oil has little relevance and the population is limited by the usual factors of famine, drought, disease and war.

So what fraction of the total world population will be affected by the rising price of oil? Billyo has suggested 80%. Do we have any advance on this? :?: :?: :?:

Well you massage the oil in and one thing leads to another.....you know how it is
My wife's been doing it to me for years and I haven't got pregnant yet?

Space Cat, we seem to have wars no matter what type of enegy we use  managed properly the contry- side will feed us, with or without oil :) it just wont feed 6 billion of us  so a few will die and not be replace, just have a fag, with a becon butty washed down with a bevvie and you will go to the other side with a smile :) :) spook

Billyo, I'm on your side. :) :) :) Are you a first or second generation hippie? I'm not sure whether solar power will feed the six billion or not but I'm an optimist. According to you it's feeding 80 percent of them already and I've got no reason to dispute that. And the other 20 percent? I think that if we put our minds to it we can do it.

Technology doesn't have to use up fossil fuels until they run out. We can use our knowledge to harvest solar power more efficiently than our forebears ever could. Compare a modern wind turbine to the old windmill, or a hydro-electric station to the water wheel. They might not look pretty but they work! :) :) :)

I said earlier that I want to know what's inside a proton and what lies beyond Pluto. The key word here is WANT, not NEED. If we find ourselves without the power to drive synchrotrons or starships I'll happily adopt your approach. Pity about the wars though. :( :( :(

Sounds good to me but I'll pass on the fag if you don't mind. I see too many smokers gasping their last breath around here. Actually, there's a piece of paper drifting around the department with a saying on it and if I find it I'll post it. It goes something like this:

We are not meant to arrive at death's door in perfect condition. We are supposed to slither in sideways, body all bashed up and worn out, champagne in one hand, strawberries in the other and say "Wow, what a ride!"

With a bit of luck, my body will have to be dug out of the bedroom ceiling. :p :p :p
