Pass. Could it be that those people dead in the streets had been firing at the incoming Russians, making them "legitimate targets"?
Surely not..

Putin cancels plan to storm Azovstal plant in Mariupol

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to cancel plans to storm the Azovstal plant in the besieged Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, saying he wants it to continue to be securely blockaded instead.

The last Ukrainian hold-outs are sheltering in the city's huge Azovstal steel plant, reportedly with around 1,000 civilians.

Putin gave the order to seal off the plant to Sergei Shoigu, his defence minister.

He congratulated him on a successful operation in Mariupol after Shoigu claimed that Russian forces had captured the city.

Shoigu had previously told Putin that more than 2,000 Ukrainian fighters were still in the plant, which has an extensive underground bunker.

Having 2,000 enemy soldiers in the middle of Mariupol is not consistent with Shoigu's claim that ""Russian forces now controlled the Ukrainian port city apart from the plant"".

More like another failure to achieve Putin's desires

Putin orders troops to block off steel plant so 'not even a fly can escape'
More now on Russian President Vladimir Putin cancelling plans to storm the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, where the last Ukrainian troops in the city have been holding out against a Russian onslaught.

Putin said there was "no need to climb into these catacombs and crawl underground through these industrial facilities".

Instead, he called for his forces to "block off this industrial area so that not even a fly can escape," during a televised meeting.

He added it would be "impractical" to storm the huge industrial area, where more than 2,000 Ukrainian servicemen are said to remain.

Putin also hailed Russia's "liberation" of Mariupol after Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told him Russian forces now controlled the Ukrainian port city apart from the plant.

In real terms no one can be sure who or what is in the steel plant. Russia obviously doesn't want to flatten it or try and take it. So it's under siege. Putin says he wont waste soldiers by taking tunnels and bunkers.

Going on a soldiers comments who claims to be there it's questionable if they should continue especially if civilians are there. Latest is that the Azov brigade want to evacuate the civilians and wounded soldiers. Russia is saying surrender etc. Usual tit for tat. Currently Azov is keeping some Russian troops occupied preventing them from going elsewhere.

When Ukraine wouldn't open a corridor to Mariupol Russia did back through their occupied territory choice of to Ukraine or Russia. No side will go for a cease fire if they feel it's an advantage to the other side. They are used to regroup etc. Maybe Russia will offer the same again for civilians only. It would clarify things some what.

Reports yesterday from some one actually there indicated fighting that isn't shown on the maps. Shells flying both ways and it sounds like another town is going to have "problems". It's in the western side of Donbas. More strikes reported but may have just been a repeat of the same number.

Russia is accusing the USA of wanting to war to go on for as long as possible - until every Ukraine soldier is dead. This after suggesting they laid down their arms in Donbas etc.

 The missile launch. Known in the west as Satan II. I think Satan I is in service and has been for some time. Hypersonic. There has been mention of mach 10. Maybe that is what II is. China has hypersonic, cruise I think. Evil lot according to some news. Biden announces $b weapons development program...................

Yes yes I know there's a fair bit of rose-tinted glasses (get in the real world mate!) about the observation I'm about to make, however imagine wanting to live your life this way, especially when in a position of great power. Threatening other countries, threatening individuals etc etc. It's disgusting and repugnant. Of course, there's no point saying how do they sleep at night and so on as these 'leaders' have all the usual negative traits and can't be measured against so-called ordinary people.

Imagine being one of the world's leaders and not wanting to use the subsequent power and influence for good.

Power. Greed. Corruption. It'll never change.

On a human level, it's all just very very sad.

I'm wondering why the Ukrainian army doesn't move south towards Mariupol and attack the Russians from behind?

I expect there's a logistical reason but I can't think of it. Anyone got any ideas?

True - it is but it's happened. There is no going back. Things are as they are. It will continue until one side for some reason stops.

They are needed elsewhere and the area is thoroughly taken. This is why they want long range weapons. If they do attack they may find they have the same problem as the Russians had with Kyev and are still having in other built up areas. Actions take up troops. Those in the steel works need Russian troops to keep them there so they can't be used elsewhere. Where they are being attacked Ukraine need troops to keep them off. They may also have armed civilians in towns in or out of uniform.

Only supposition here and that's the real time data ive seen on the defence talk forums and other places going on from the NATO side, which is giving very clear Satellite and Drone recon.
If this is the case for the Russians also well im no war expert (COD and Battlefield i was pretty good) but maybe strategy is changing somewhat where the element of surprise on masse isn't such a possiblity now esp with drones flying heatseaking nightime raids i wouldn't like to be a Ukranian platoon deep in enemy territory attempting a surprise attack. There is nowhere to hide from them unless you have a very good thermal stealth procedure to deter your heat sig. Or you will soon have a special mission rusky rocket raining down, and knowing them it will be carpet bombing a few square kms around you for good measure.

Tricky.

It would leave a huge space for the Russians to flow into behind the defenders; from Belarus and from the air. If the Ukes overcommitted, they could quickly be fighting on 2 fronts with Kyiv exposed.

I get the impression Russia still needs to attack. Could be it's undoing especially towns. Reports suggest that people have more or less moved out of small places so suppose they will be near flattened if a problem. Roads will still be wanted. There has already been signs of that. The reporter said why did they do that - no signs of military etc.

More serious pundits reckon Ukraine has made good use of hit and run tactics. They may even have been doing that from inside towns.

An ex USA trainer that had worked in Ukraine reckoned that taking account of where they had troops in action Russia has 60k for more work in Donbas. Few days ago and he said as of last night. No idea how he knows.

War is like a chess game really but no longer like WWII etc, 5,000,000 soldiers on one side with many probably killed. I wonder if this aspect makes it worse for civilians.

Arms supply? Mention that some has arrived in Poland? Also that the USA is buying up soviet stuff - there are calibre problems? Not seen as a problem with artillery if new stuff is supplied as they don't need much training. Training mentioned but not how. All are into the war of words even the west really. Time will tell.

Lines on maps will matter to Russia too. A commentators words not mine referring to a city that is popular with refugees -and out of Donbas - stuff gets lobbed in that direction now and again to show that they are not safe. If they want more than Donbas and keep going the whole thing could last for ????. Some pundits reckon that sanctions will make no difference to the war. It makes sense as the kit is paid for with rubles. If they run out of Israel drones they wont get any more. Maybe they do need to import some stuff for war kit. Their own drones - I don't think anyone is sure but it seems they are seen as being late to the "game".
