The state will also have a big say, for example if there is a mental capacity issue between the original patient decision and the weeks it will take for the forms to be signed off. NHS waiting times here we come.

You misunderstand the structure of the nhs if you think they dont have enough staff to write procedures, guidance, policies etc.

There are times when the state (on behalf of the public) is right to intervene and times when it is wrong to do so...
Avoiding whether or not to have a painful lingering death should be the choice of the individual.
And if anyone has seen a painful lingering death first hand, it would be very strange for them to wish the same for themselves should they be unfortunate enough to be in that situation!
I'm sure that there would be a lot of god botherers who would stick it out to the bitter end, and that is their choice.
A strange choice, but one that is theirs to make.

What choice? If someone is mentally ill, are they in the position to make a rational choice.
