1. They found bogus invoices: no shyt Sherlock! This has been going on worldwide for decades. It started in Italy in the new millennium and everybody else jumped on the bandwagon. Even in UK there are hundreds of companies with large turnovers without trading.
2. The mafia has moved to white collar crime, safer and "respectable". This has contributed to wild west system in Italian cities small and large.
In the past mafia didn't want to draw attention to their territories and was keeping crime against citizens down. In Sicily you could leave your front door open and girls could go out at night without fear. Not praising mafia, but the authorities should've predicted this downside when they started the honorable war against mafia. My father was directly involved in the fight against mafia and could foresee what would happen once the big time criminals were jailed. Unfortunately he wasn't in a position high enough to be heard.
