Before the previous election Trump was trying to get Zelensky to dish the dirt on Hunter Biden (and by default his dad), Zelensky put his money on Biden winning (correctly) and refused to dish any dirt. I'm guessing the Donald has a long memory for this sort of thing.
Hence, when Biden took early retirement, he pardoned his son for all offences he'd committed (the tax drugs and gun stuff) but also gave him a pre-emptive pardon for any crimes he may have committed after a certain date, maybe 2010 I can't be bothered to google. That was only the 2nd time in the history of the US a pre-emptive pardon was given, 1st was to Nixon, for obscure reasons.
Biden drafted mineral deals with Ukraine in December or earlier but Zelensky delayed signing, guessing it would curry more favour if Trump signed the agreement, payback for the Hunter Biden Burisma oil stuff, as I said, the Donald has a good memory so it's looking like payback time against Zelenski.
The EU also have signed agreements for post war arrangements with Ukraine, I doubt we'll find any meaningful details on them.

The 2019 election was rated free by international inspectors. But not especially fair. That was because Zelensky's opponent, the sitting President, tried to use the power of the state to influence it. Despite that, Zelensky still thrashed him.
