So you are arguing that Putin had no interest in invading Ukraine until there was talk of it joining NATO……
that makes zero sense, because if Putin had no interest in invading Ukraine why would he care if it joined NATO?

Putin originally claimed it was a humanitarian mission and to demand demilitarisation.

Putin claimed that Russian military intervention in Ukraine was necessary to "protect people who have been subjected to abuse and genocide" by the Ukrainian government and to "protect Russia and our people".

NATO membership wasn't even a suggestion at the time, either as part of the Ukrainian domestic discussions or as part of international conversations, except as a possible tactic to prevent a second Russian invasion.

And if that was Putin's goal he massively ****ed up as we can see from the new NATO members joining explicitly to protect themselves against an expanding Russia.

That is your view. I am stating facts not something that I simply twist to support my narrative. You say that you do not understand why Russia would be against Ukraine joining NATO. Look at it from his prospective and you will soon realise. Russia could never and will never join NATO therefore the only way to ensure that Ukraine does not join NATO is to take that country back into the hands of the soviets. It is all about history and not something you can just grasp without knowing the years before this invasion as to the reason why the invasion took place.
