The extreme recent heat obviously makes wildfires more likely and also makes the fires themselves more ferocious, but it's a bit daft trying to deny that wildfires happen.
The director of the European Forest Institute made some interesting points on the radio the other day; He did mention that many fires are set deliberately but he also said that this isn't unusual - sometimes due to arson but also due to land owners burning scrub. Generally, land management by farmers and producers has changed considerably over recent years due to commercial changes, and that hasn't helped things. He put a lot of blame on poor management, some due to cost savings but also due to changes in the way the Greek fire service operates and is managed. Some of this is just poor management but some is due to changes in government and administration. There was a major investigation and report after the last round of serious fires a few years back, but the government changed and the report just went down and down the priority list. The fact is, it is just more complicated than laying the blame on global warming.
