the french aren't doing everything they can to deter them, as every one that comes over is one less for them to have to deal with. And they dont want the shanty towns in calais and neither should they have to put up with such an uncivilised camp.

Process the asylum seekers efficientlly and effectively will clear the backlog. But that will remove a stick which the current government is using to beat the channel crossings, so they don't want to do that.

Create a genuine legal avenue for the asylum seekers will destroy the market for people smugglers.

Channel crossings are a small part of the overall net migration, but they consume the major part of the "political propoganda".
