Ukraine didn't need a particularly critical eye to "
look bad" before the invasion! A mess - a bloody one.
Not many of us were particularly interested in the country, which was just another one with some fighting going on in the corner.
Crimea should have been a wake-up, in hindsight. For Ukraine of course it was, as their army shows.
There had been a number of referenda/votes in the area, all rigged. We see it suggested that, Putin may be trying to repeat.
Years back it was accepted wisdom that the USSR needed grain imports, from eg USA, so had to watch itself somewhat.
It appears Pootin saw that,
put it right and realised whom to use to build dependance on his oil. The
history with Schröder is salutory.
Germany's naivety, we could say gullibility, is notable. Ironic that they were concerned about some of their supply being piped through Ukraine.
Unfortunately, recent oil price vacillations are preventing the usual producer-response to a supply squeeze. Nobody wants the price dropping so they
aren't pumping more. Biden is releasing some from reserves, but I imagine oil producers in the US are Republicans, on the whole.
Have I Got News For You, 2014:
Edit: Pootn will be cross about
Lithuania.
